regular coffee #2--much ado about nothing

"Is it possible that any villainy should be so dear?

“Thou should'st rather ask if it were possible any villainy should be so rich; for when rich villains have need of poor ones, poor ones may make what price they will.”

Yes, it has been a long time since I have posted. I have been traveling quite a bit, to Spain, Serbia and Romania. All the while, drinking espresso and getting ideas for new coffee blends. I had hoped to use the Clover machine to highlight the nuances of these various coffees, but alas a bombshell was dropped a month ago just as I was leaving for Serbia—Starbucks had bought Clover. So this Regular Coffee #2 has changed from a solution to a problem.

The day before I left for Serbia, I read in the NY Times that Starbucks bought Clover. I still have not gotten an official notification from Clover. I was told that I had one day to get in any orders for Clover machines. So now it seems we will be unable to get any more Clovers, although I still have not gotten any official word. So if you want to experience Clover coffee you will have to go to Lifesmart Foods in Utica or visit us at our showroom.

In any problem there are seeds of a solution so we will return to our Luddite roots by using a French press to brew our coffees. Ah, the simplicity. It seems to fit the trend of trading in a car for a bicycle. So let’s push pedals to our local independent coffee house for a cup of our latest offerings:

• Organic Rain Forest Alliance El Salvador Finca Batres
• Organic Peru Cuzco EP
• FTO Papua New Guinea La Kunjun
• Organic Corktown Blend

Vive le French press.

Starbucks is right were Clover machines belong along with super automatic espresso machines. They are a production machine that takes an unskilled person to produce whats in the cup. Working at a location that is not a Starbucks that currently uses two Clovers I decided to do a test. Three micro lot Colombian coffees possibly the three best to come out of Colombia last year side by side blind tasting. The panel consisted of 10 people and are some of the most respected in the coffee, wine, and culinary worlds for their palates. All ten picked the manual pour over blind as the more nuanced, better tasting coffee over the clover. Of course these were great coffees from great producers roasted in just the right way to exemplify their natural sugars.
